Copyright & Reuse on XSci

XSci is committed to protecting author rights while making published research accessible on the platform. This page explains, in practical terms, how copyright and reuse work on XSci.

Unless XSci expressly states otherwise for a particular work, publication on XSci does not by default apply a Creative Commons or other open public reuse license.

1. Authors Retain Copyright

When you publish on XSci, you retain copyright in your work. We do not require you to transfer ownership of your copyright to XSci.

In practice, this means you remain the copyright holder of your manuscript, subject to any rights you have granted to co-authors, employers, funders, publishers, or other third parties.

2. Rights Granted to XSci

In order to operate the platform and make published works available, authors grant XSci a non-exclusive license to:

  • Display and distribute published works on the XSci platform
  • Include metadata relating to published works in indexing, discovery, and citation services
  • Where available and applicable, assign and maintain a DOI for published works
  • Preserve and archive published works as part of the scholarly record

These rights are granted only to the extent reasonably necessary for XSci to operate, provide, publish, distribute, index, preserve, and administer its services and published records.

This license is non-exclusive, which means authors remain free to use their own work elsewhere, subject to any other rights or restrictions that may apply.

3. What Readers May Do by Default

Unless otherwise expressly stated by XSci for a particular work, readers may:

  • Read published works on the platform
  • Cite published works in academic or other lawful contexts
  • Share links to published works

Unless otherwise expressly stated by XSci for a particular work or otherwise permitted by law, readers may not by default:

  • Reproduce the full text of a work elsewhere
  • Create adapted, translated, or derivative versions for redistribution
  • Use the work for commercial reuse
  • Redistribute the work on another platform, repository, or database

4. Third-Party Content in Manuscripts

If a manuscript includes content created by third parties — such as figures, tables, images, datasets, or extended quotations — the submitting author is responsible for ensuring that such content is included lawfully.

This may require the author to:

  • Obtain permission from the relevant rights holder
  • Rely on an applicable legal exception such as fair use or fair dealing, where appropriate
  • Provide proper attribution
  • Indicate where third-party material is subject to different rights or restrictions from the rest of the manuscript

5. Platform Content

The XSci platform itself — including its design, branding, logos, software, and AI technologies — is the intellectual property of OXSCI LTD or its licensors.

Copyright or reuse rules that apply to academic works published on XSci do not apply to the XSci platform itself unless we expressly state otherwise.
