Abstract

The unprecedented rate at which Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is being integrated into higher education requires the parallel evolution of educator preparation—one that goes beyond technological familiarity to encompass evidence-based pedagogical competencies formalized through credentialing frameworks. The systematic mixed-studies review critically synthesizes 29 empirical studies (2024–2026) on GenAI integration in higher language education to identify the core competency domains necessary for effective, equitable, and inclusive GenAI-mediated teaching. Following PRISMA guidelines, studies employing quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods designs were retrieved across five academic databases and analyzed using advanced meta-integration and thematic analysis. Findings converge on four competency domains that credentialing programs must address: first, facilitating equitable and inclusive participation by supporting linguistically and cognitively diverse learners; second, leveraging GenAI's capacity for instantaneous, dialogic feedback to reduce language anxiety and enhance learner self-efficacy; third, designing adaptive, culturally responsive instruction aligned with Universal Design for Learning principles; and fourth, overcoming infrastructural inequality—including the digital divide between free and premium GenAI tools—and mitigating algorithmic bias. Across all domains, the evidence consistently shows that GenAI's transformative potential is determined less by technological affordances than by the quality of instructional design, institutional support, and ethical governance—precisely the competencies that formal credentialing is positioned to certify. These findings offer an evidence-based foundation for developing, assessing, and internationalizing AI credential programs for higher education language educators worldwide.
